Discover the Beauty of Zendala Drawing (a simple, calming art practice)
Apr 17, 2026
There’s something quietly magical about pattern drawing.
You start with one simple line… then another…
and before you know it, a beautiful, intricate design begins to emerge.
If you’ve ever looked at pattern art or Zentangle® and thought “this looks too complicated for me” - you’re not alone. I was there too!
But here’s the truth: it’s much simpler than it looks.
And that’s exactly why I’m so excited to introduce our new course:
Tangle with Ann – Zendala
What Is Zendala Drawing?
Zendala drawing is a circular form of pattern drawing inspired by Zentangle® and mandala art.
It combines:
- simple, repeating patterns
- step-by-step drawing
- a calm, focused creative process
The word itself blends the idea of Zen (a relaxed, mindful state) with mandala (a circular form often associated with balance and wholeness).
And interestingly, mandala drawing is something people are naturally drawn to. When we draw circles we feel balanced, complete, whole and safe.
With Zendala, you create these circular designs using simple patterns - and that’s what creates that beautiful sense of flow.
Why Pattern Drawing is So Calming (Neuro Arts Perspective)
Because drawing patterns doesn’t just create something beautiful, it helps regulate your nervous system. It is a Mindfulness practice!
This is one of the reasons I include practices like this in my Neuro Art School.
When you engage in pattern drawing:
- your attention settles
- your mind becomes quieter
- your body relaxes
- your nervous system begins to regulate
It’s a gentle, rhythmic process that gives your brain something simple to focus on.
Line by line you become present.
Patterns Have Always Been Part of Human Creativity
Pattern art is not new. For thousands of years, patterns have appeared in:
- folk art
- textiles
- architecture
- ceramics
- and let’s not forget Mother Nature!
I remember studying patterns during my Folk Arts and Crafts classes at art school, especially in folk painting. We explored how simple shapes repeat and evolve into something expressive and meaningful.
Even then, I could feel it wasn’t just decoration. It had rhythm, structure, a certain visual language with its own rules.
Zendala Step by Step (Even If You’re a Beginner)
Our course is taught by Ann Diane Tai, a Certified Zentangle® Teacher (CZT), and it’s designed to be very easy to follow.
Inside the course, you’ll learn:
- simple patterns that create depth
- geometric and organic pattern techniques
- spiral Zendala designs inspired by nature
- flowing S-line compositions
- elegant borders and layouts
The lessons are short, clear and super practical.
You can pause, draw along, and we encourage you to go at your own pace. Zero pressure. Just enjoy the process.
If You’ve Ever Thought “I can’t draw a pretty picture…”
This is a beautiful place to start.
Because Zendala drawing shows you that drawing isn’t about capability or talent,
it’s about taking one line at a time.
What once felt complicated becomes simple, calming and surprisingly enjoyable!
