As an artist, I have to confess — I absolutely adore exploring different art materials. I don’t think I’ve ever walked out of a stationery or art supply shop without picking up something new to try! There’s something magical about discovering the perfect pen or paper that makes the creative process even more enjoyable.

Over the years, through my work with the AM Method™, NeuroGraphica®, Neurographic Art and other line art, I’ve tested hundreds of tools. Here are my tried-and-true favourites that I use in my own creative and teaching practice.

Let’s dive in:

  1. Fineliners: My go-to are Uni Pin or Pigma Micron fineliners because they don’t smudge or bleed. If you’re in the mood for a brush feel, Tombow pens are just delightful.

  2. Highlighters: You’ve got to have a neon yellow highlighter in your kit. I love Stabilo Boss or Staedtler Textsurfer — they’re all reliable and add that perfect pop of colour.

  3. Colored Pencils: I’m a huge fan of oil-based pencils like Faber-Castell Polychromos or Caran d’Ache Luminance.

Prismacolor  – soft core and luminous blending for smooth shading.
    GIOTTO Stilnovo – a fantastic budget-friendly choice

  4. Paper: Smoothness is key. I like Faber-Castell A5 sketch pads, but Canson and Strathmore mixed-media papers are also fantastic. And for a heavyweight option, I always keep Bristol board around.

Pro tip: Always keep cheap printer paper nearby for warm-ups and spontaneous creativity. Sometimes the best drawings happen when there’s zero pressure to be perfect!
